In complexity, much relevant information is not codifiable: it can not be pinned down in language, not even of a mathematical kind. It can’t he spoken, nor written. Tacit knowing is in the realm of sensing. It is by being and acting that this information is sensed, felt and becomes part of ourconsious awareness via e.g. instinct or intuition. It is the reason the medical profession trains it’s juniors through apprenticeships with it’s seniors. Working together with, and in close proximity of experienced mentors, allows the transfer of the tacit knowing to the younger professional. This knowing, tacit though it is, contains finely honed skills, information, traditions and precise detection heuristics often accumulated through generations of predessesors. Now imagine only transferring that information which can be codified, written down or programmed.
The loss of quality is huge. It is this tacit knowing, that allows for weak signal detection: the skilled and early reception of emerging patters as they start, but can’t otherwise be detected nor measured yet.
