Self Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan)

In organisations of the nimble flock like kind, the alignment by positional power and authority in a more rigid hierarchy no longer exists. It is no longer so much about alignment but much more about coherence.

Now, how does the flock keep all it’s birds together in a sychronized whole? In my opinion, it is the autonomic motivation of the individual persons, that acts as the glue, gelling the people together in a coherent flock.

Autonomic motivation is mostly intrinsic, plus that part of extrinsic motivation (SDT, Deci & Ryan) for the required tasks that allow for tasks that intrinsicly motivate.

This has three drivers, to satisfy; each person experiences:

  • their relatedness to the flock , their own role, tasks, etc.;
  • their competence actuallt improving;
  • the autonomy befitting their personal needs.

When all these needs are met, people are highly commited to the flock, their roles, jobs and tasks. Employee engagement rises. Autonomically motivated people, easily become high performers and active advocators for your organisationm.
